What's Your Knitting Soundtrack?

If you’re a knitter or a crafter, chances are you’ve found yourself wondering, “What shall I listen to while I work on this project?” It’s a topic I've often seen discussed; what’s the perfect background sound for a creative session?

After my blog post yesterday about weaving in yarn ends, GeekKirk over on Bluesky shared that their favorite way to get through this tedious task is to “throw on a Dateline marathon,” and I can understand the appeal. Enough intrigue to keep you entertained, but not so much that it distracts you from the job at hand.

Personally, my go-to for serious knitting sessions is RailCowGirl on YouTube, so if you haven’t come across her channel yet, let me introduce you to a beautiful and slightly nerdy world.

RailCowGirl is a Norwegian train driver who films her journeys through the breathtaking landscapes of Norway's Bergen Line, from snow-covered mountains on Christmas Eve to lush green fjords in summer. Her videos are filmed from the train’s cab, offering an immersive, first-person view of the tracks stretching out ahead. There’s no commentary, just the rhythmic sounds of the train and, in the winter videos, the occasional rumble as the train ploughs through a big snow drift. It’s hypnotic, soothing, and it helps keep me on track with my stitches, if you'll pardon the pun.

You can find her channel on YouTube by searching for “RailCowGirl.” She has videos of varying lengths, so whether you’ve got 15 minutes or a couple of hours to knit, you’re bound to find something that fits your session. This one is my personal favourite.

Of course, everyone has their own idea of the perfect background sound, and listening to a train ploughing through snow for four hours won't be everyone's cup of tea. Some may prefer true crime podcasts or audiobooks, others love music, and plenty of crafters are partial to their favorite TV shows. The key is finding something engaging enough to make the time fly, but not so engrossing that you lose track of your project.

So, what do you listen to when you’re knitting or crafting? Are you a Dateline marathoner like GeekKirk, a RailCowGirl nerd like me, or do you have your own favorite soundtrack? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear your recommendations!

  1. I like audiobooks myself. Sometimes movies are good, because I've been know to look so close on what I'm knitting that my eyes don't focus right when I look up. Having to change the focal length of my eyes helps.

    1. I tried audiobooks but found it difficult to concentrate on knitting and dialogue at the same time. White noise type videos seems to be what works best for me.

  3. I usually have some kind of ambient music on, or nothing. Lots of knitting happens in the car, or during football games.

  4. I find myself listening either to instrumental music or spiritual chants. But yeah, I definitely need sound to go with my cross stitching. Not while writing, though. I need it quiet so I can hear the Muse's voice.

  5. I love RailCowGirl! I tend to listen to audiobooks or radio show style podcasts. I like The White Vault and I just got turned onto Solar with Alan Cummings, Helen Hunt, Stefanie Beatriz and others.
